Air bike
A calorie or distance target on a fan bike; quick to judge, but monitors differ between models.
- SimDay default
- 25 cal
- Loaded
- No
- Plates change between heats
- No
- Space per lane
- About 1.5 m × 0.7 m per bike.
The standard to brief
The athlete pedals and pushes until the monitor shows the target calories (or distance). Feet stay on the pedals while working; the athlete may stop and rest on the seat.
Common no-reps
- Getting off before the monitor reaches the target.
- Starting before the judge has reset the monitor.
Judging notes
- Use the same bike model in every lane if you can. If you mix models, publish which bike each lane uses, because calorie counts are not guaranteed to match between makes.
- Reset the monitor between heats and check it reads zero before the start.
Setting it up in a gym
- Adjust seat height to the athlete before their heat (put the seat height on the heat sheet notes if they ask).
- Check batteries in every monitor the night before.
Equipment
- Fan bikes (same model per lane)
- Spare batteries
- Towels — fan bikes blow sweat everywhere
Scaling for beginners
Lower the calorie target for scaled divisions.
Formats that use it
- Zone-based fitness race: 25 cal
- Indoor sim (no run route): 20 cal, 20 cal
