The standard to brief
Each rep starts with both feet on the floor facing the box and ends with both feet on the floor on the other side. Athletes may jump over, jump on and off, or step up and over, unless your division standard says otherwise. Common heights are 51 cm (20 in) and 61 cm (24 in).
Common no-reps
- Touching the box with hands or knees, if your standard forbids it.
- Going round the box rather than over it.
- Starting the next rep before both feet are down on the far side.
Judging notes
- Judge from the side of the box to see both take-off and landing.
- Shins catch box edges; foam or soft boxes are safer in the last stage of a race.
Setting it up in a gym
- Check box heights against your standard and label each box.
- Box tops of at least about 38 × 38 cm give a safe landing area for step-overs.
Equipment
- Boxes at each division height (soft boxes preferred)
