Space per lane
A 20–50 m out-and-back lane; a carry needs less width than a sled lane.

The standard to brief

The athlete carries one implement in each hand at their sides over the full marked distance. Implements may be put down to rest, but only within the lane, and the athlete restarts from where they were put down.

Common no-reps

  • Dropping or throwing the implements rather than setting them down.
  • Moving forward while one implement is on the floor (carrying one, then going back for the other).
  • Resting the implements on the body (on the hips or shoulders) to carry them.

Judging notes

  • Watch the set-down point: the athlete must pick up from where the implements were put down.
  • On a lap course, count laps like the run.

Setting it up in a gym

  1. Use matching pairs; a 16 kg and a 20 kg kettlebell in one carry is a different station.
  2. Pre-place each division’s pairs in labelled zones so athletes pick up the right weight without asking.

Equipment

  • Matching kettlebell or farmers-handle pairs for every division load
  • Load labels
  • Chalk

Scaling for beginners
